graph paper is an old theme. Mostly because it took so long to finally post another. Some new stuff for the site is coming, here’s a theme to start things off. I’m considering closing the comments, but disqus has really made some cool updates.

Anyhow, graph paper is a theme based off, well, graph.. paper… It’s another one of Heather’s really cool creations. And, apparently this is all a result of her excuse:

I go through an unholy amount of graph paper.

But seriously, this theme’s really cool, it supports reblog posts and even custom colors!

Downsides: So many custom colors that they go down below a selectable area in the tumblr theme color customization section… which, though it’s tubmlr’s fault is really weird. And the post title link hover has an itty, bitty bug (though it might just be my Safari).

Heather makes some really cool, clean themes. This one, box factory, is no exception. It’s a bit like the other box themes out there, except it’s very minimalistic, and more important, the usability is at its max here.

They’re just that. Regular.

other details

Permalink pages have the “previous” and “next” post links. And if a post is too long in an index page, it displays a scroll bar on mouse over. Sweet! No custom colors, but it’s worth it.

Alrighty then… This time we’ve got two themes! Both emulate the tumblr dashboard look. There’s dashboard. from Christopher. Cool dude, cool theme. And then there’s dashtheme realized by Tal. They’re both really cool but each has it’s own strength and weaknesses. Read on for the details…

regular posts

Chris’ theme looks like it’s built with the tumblr group in mind. Mostly due to the fact that the posts point right to the author. Now, each post is also that darker color which reminds you of when you post stuff in the real dashboard. Tal’s theme on the other hand, is built for the individual in mind. The icons that are used for posting are used here for identification though it’s strange that they don’t work as permalinks also.

Again, Tal’s theme gives you an area for the tumbleog description (naturally more suited for individuals), while Christopher’s theme just has a cool(er) header in my opinion.

Max made this theme, Penguin Classics, based off the Penguin Classics books. It’s great, especially if you like penguins and books and penguin books or themes with penguins or even penguin themed bogs based off penguin books. Yes.

regular post

Great choice for fonts and layout. The posts are clearly divided, though it can be a bit confusing to know what post divider, which is also a permalink, belongs to what post.

other details

This penguin theme doesn’t support custom colors. :( but it has penguins, so… (also, just be careful how you code your blog description…)

Paul’s on a roll with some sweet themes. He’s also the creator of a similar theme called Slio (now available directly from tumblr) ,but personally, I believe Museum surpasses Silo on many levels. Its design and functionality is great for those who like control.

regular post

Posts are just like silo’s box style except this time they have the “more +” links that allows you to finally use long(er) posts with the theme. A nice fadeout is provided to hide the remaining text. Cool!

other details

Though this theme doesn’t support custom colors, it still looks great. Makes for a great portfolio! I also strongly recommend that you check out the documentation before using Museum since long posts require a little extra with tags and such.

From the creator of Thought Cloud comes Griddle, an amazing theme that helps you out with quick and easy itegration with Twitter, Flickr, and Last.fm while also making it a great place to put all of your posts. It has been thurougly thought out and created to work perfectly.

Posts are placed to the right of the page and are nicely separated from one another.

other details

As you can see, this theme has a place for everything and it all just fits. Any downsides? Two. Custom colors are unsupported and if your title is too long it may not fit. Other than that it’s great!

liquid typo

Liquid Typo was realized by Sid, who also brought us TINAT. This one’s another typographically-based tumblr theme. You can see how you are provided with a large menu right up front. The overall design is nice and clean. Though the layout may present some problems on smaller screens as the post permalinks are placed to the right and take up much space. This is, in fact, a liquid layout (hence the name) and would look nice on large screens. Try it out though. You won’t really know what it’s like until you see it on your own blog.

Posts are straightforward. The bottom of each post is styled with a cool little design. To the right is placed a large permalink explanation with the support of tags as well as the time posted.

other post

Most posts are styled with centered text. Yes. Centered. The description area is to the left to even out the design.

chat posts

Chat posts are the only ones that have left-aligned text. Here’s a good example of how the tagg permalink styles are placed.

Completely customizeable colors. Gotta love that.

Thought Cloud (which was created by Heather Rivers) is one of those themes where it’s clear that much time has been spent on both the design and code. This is, as the name suggests, a thought cloud-style theme. The concept has been realized very effectively. The header is aligned to the right of the posts which are left-aligned in proportion to the whole page. There’s a nice little cloud fixed in position placed so it is always in sight, but out of the way.

regular post

Though Cloud has these really simple posts that are a little small in size. Though it is usually enough to post whatever it is you’re thinking about. :) The rounded corners just wrap it all up. And the dates to the left - the styling just perfect for this look.

image post

The images are sized just right and they have a black border around them. Part of the bottom border is where the description of the image goes. This concept goes for other kinds of posts including video and audio.

quote posts

The quotes have little “speak” shapes from the left. You can see an example of what the permalink links look like. The permalink only appears when you mouseover on the individual post.

other details

Thought Cloud is light on the eyes and a easy on contrast. Though this theme does not support custom colors, it’s an easy choice for those that are fans of the color blue.

TINAT (mono) is tight like spandex. Well, not really like spandex. But still, it’s cool. This theme was released by sid05 a couple of days from the creation of this post, and it’s great to see some talented people contributing toward the tumblr community. Though the screenshots are from the mono version, the extended is great as well, the only idfference is a couple of extra link areas. The header has the basic links like, Mobile, RSS, Archive, etc. conveniently placed at the top. A portrait image is placed to the left of the tumbleog title. Tight!

regular post

TINAT has some tight post styling. You have a basic layout with the time at the bottom right (and a nice little ^ thingy). As well as the general date of posts at the top left on some light-grey styling.

other post

The links come up as »{link}. Which is some nice detail, eh? Quote posts also have the ^ pointing at the source and they come together nicely.

footer

The footer is my favorite, it just puts everthing together and encompases the tumbleog in a nice format. Check out the images.

other details

TINAT is tight, so it has customizable colors. You can be confident that this was created with thurough thuroughsity. The expanded version includes some nice extras that do require some HTML knowledge. But it’s worth it. (By the way, TINAT stands for “This is not a template”. Tight!)

This new Tricolor theme comes from sarah mogin. Not bad for a first try at a tumblr theme. It seems geared toward those with a no-brainer approach to bloging. I say this because it’s designed to work with three colors (hence the name, Tricolor) - and each post hardly differs from the other. The header is very nice, though. It includes all necessary and extra links like, navigation, as well as random post view. Cool.

regular post

The posts Are extrememly basic. It looks no more complicated than what you’d expect from a post. Each post includes the time and date at the bottom left corner.

other post

Tricolor displays other posts in either yellow or (hot?) pink (all colors are customizeable). Check out the images for a quick example.

footer

I’ve gotta say, the footer is pretty cool. You have an area devoted to the tumbleog author, which includes a portrait image. Under that, you have the optional “following section”. And right at the bottom, a small credit area. If you’d like to include twitter posts in the footer you can contact Sarah and she’ll help you out.

other details

Tricolor is a good attempt at a first theme. It’s great for those who need something quick and simple. Customization is good too. You can change the background, text, Color 1, Color 2, and Color 3 colors! The one downside to having just three colors is that the different types of posts can sometimes blend and become undistinguishable from each other. Though some formating is provided, it needs at least six or so colors for each post type.

This is a brand new theme created by paul giacherio (how awesome is that name?). Silo is an amazing theme in that it’s laid out completely different than most tumblr blogs. The unique box-grid system really sets it appart. The header is straightforward. The title is to the left and the “archive” and “feed” links are to the right - all within the constraints of the width of the blog giving it a simple, and uniform look.

regular post

The posts are divided into three sections. More importantly, they are designed in a 3x4 grid layout. This box-style theme gives readers the ability to quickly see multiple posts without scrolling multiple pages down. The regular post has the date placed at the bottom right corner (out of the place but noticeable).

quote post

Silo does us a favor of showing quotes in large tan (yellow?) text. They’re quickly distinguishable and have a quotation mark on the left.

image post

Image posts on silo are probably my favorite. They are resized to fit perfectly inside each box. It’s a nice way to show off your photography portfolio.

other details

Silo is compatible with the latest features of tumblr right out of the server (though, from what I see, the “following” feature that allows you to show who you follow on tumblr is not supported). They permalink pages are amazing. They show a couple of extra things such as: who this post was re-bloged from, tags (finally they’re used for something), and the date posted. The posts are semi-transparent allowing you to see the cool, modern background image. When moused-over the post background becomes fully opaque. Another extra is the “older” and “newer” navigation box (only visible on “index” pages, not permalinks). Though it’s an overall great theme, there are several things you should be aware of.

peacock tail

This is a fairly new theme created by the infamous Richard Dunlop-Walters. This one’s for the typography buffs. It is incredibly clean and is one of the best typographically-based themes out there. peacock tail is also built with the latest tumblr features such as “follower variables” to display a beautifully contrasted list of people you follow. Links, as well as other content that is meant to grab attention, are clearly visible in a bright red. Seemingly important areas are contrasted from the rest by black backgrounds on white text.

regular post

The posts are divided into four sections. The permalink is easily accessible from the “TEXT” label. The date is shown above the post title with an outstanding “day number” in larger, red text. It has been designed so that the date is shown only once for each day (not every post). Finally, the content area is placed below the post label with a centered title.

quote post

In italics, simply left-justified with a right-justified source in red. Again, everything is clean, simple, just easy to read.

chat post

These are no different than other post types. The “speakers” are in bold to give us a quick understanding of who said what, and the lines are divided with a light dashed bottom border.

footer

I just had to include the footer in this post. It is very simple and gives the theme author the appropriate accredited space.

other details

This is version 2 of the theme. Though it does not support custom colors, it is clear that in this instance it is better to keep it that way (especially for those without much web-development experience). If those that have more experience wish to change colors, the CSS code is supplied in-line so it can be quickly edited. This really is, “a typographically splendid tumblr theme.”

This is my personal theme. It has a basic, clean look. The header is fully customizable depending on the name of the blog. It uses a simple transparent png trick to let you customize the tan color to whatever you wish. The transparent png will also allow the “dips” that go down into the stripes to change color.

regular post

The posts are divided into four sections. The permalink is placed on the icon-‘text’ area as well as the Title area. The date is shown in simple text above the title and the post text is placed under the title with some spacing. When a mouse-over is done on the title, the text enlarges and the background color changes to a white while the text color changes to a main-red. This transformation is done smoothly with javascript from moofx. All colors, including those that are affected solely by the javascript are customizable.

quote post

Quotes are displayed in a solid block in italics. The quote, when posted, does not require that you type the quotes, or the tilda for the source - since they are automatically inserted upon submission.

chat post

These can include a title if desired. The “speakers” are in bold. When the background color is changed for the theme, the background color of the even chat posts are also changed to match.

The theme will be updated this month to include the recent changes and upgrades made by tumblr. It will support re-blogs, author posts, and “followed blogs” among other things.

TumblrThemes was created by danny on Saturday, February 2, 2008.
I created this place because other sites that were devoted to collecting and sharing tumblr themes were either outdated or rarely updated. Most importantly, I believed that a site that was supposed to be devoted to tumblr themes should be powered by tumblr. If you see a theme out there, or have just created one, be sure to let us know. But don’t expect to be up immediately. We’re picky. :)

this theme

Unfortunately, I will not release this theme. It is meant for here and nowhere else. Either way, it was designed to only handle two kinds of posts: text and picture. The text posts are designed for general submissions like this one, and picture posts are designed to portray the individual themes. ~~Picture posts were also chosen due to the fact that, if followed, people could re-blog them with a preview image visible in the dashboard. Clever, eh?~~ Screw it, just realized the maximum size for image width is 500px. I need it to stretch to the edges of the post area. Clever, eh?

Searching for themes is disabled until enough themes are posted.

We plan on making changes to this site (aesthetically) so follow us to keep up with it. Also, let me know if you would like to join this group. I need a couple of extra responsible people that can post themes under a set of rules that would allow this site to keep it’s standards.
